Is a Direct Cremation for you, and for your family?

Direct cremation

Simple, direct cremations are attracting more interest and press coverage but how important is it to talk through what you are choosing before reaching a decision?

Direct cremations offer an alternative, simpler, more affordable funeral option, but without a real ‘goodbye’, the opportunity to grieve can be left unresolved.

Since the pandemic, we are witnessing a rise in the much simpler direct cremation, which is easy to plan, and is available at an affordable price. Whilst funerals led by a celebrant and attended by friends and family do remain the preferred choice for the majority of people, there are some who are going for a simple route, to save funds, and to redirect the money elsewhere that would otherwise be spent on a funeral.

Sharing stories, paying respects, and saying a proper goodbye can be lost.

Direct cremation can work well for some individuals, offering a quick and easy option, which removes what some see as the ‘sadness’ of visiting a crematorium, but for others, not having a chance to grieve collectively can leave them feeling extremely empty. This often leads to retrospective regrets around whether they could have considered saying goodbye in a slightly different way.

As recently highlighted in a BBC article, concern is being raised around the lack of support for family members who are trying to grieve when choosing a direct cremation. The article talks of unresolved grief, and the undeniably important role that grief plays for the family members at the end of a loved one’s life.

On the 21st February, Jeremy Vine, (timestamp 0:40:00) also discusses the rise in direct cremations, and along with his callers, he presents a balanced view on the benefits and disadvantages of direct cremations.

For many, having no family present and no service, has led to doubts around whether saving money was the right compromise.

Don’t miss the chance to discuss the range of choice you have available.

Whilst the traditional funeral involving a coffin, hearse, flowers, and a funeral service or celebration with family and friends in attendance, is a comforting choice, there is a range of other options that can be chosen and tailored to suit your needs.

At CPJ Field, we encourage individuals and families to come and talk to us about direct cremation and the range of funeral options that are open to them, to discuss whether this option is the one for them all.

Whilst we can arrange a direct cremation, it should be a considered choice, ideally made with family members and even very close friends present. More than ever, and as we have always done, we can tailor and personalise a funeral to individual wishes. We offer other simple options such as a funeral with no ceremony (similar to a direct cremation only locally based with more choice for you), green funerals, woodland funerals, and can help with arranging funerals at home, or in a hotel or community hall, with music and appropriate celebrations.

Talking through all the options is part of what we do every day, and we offer a no obligation discussion to help you reach the right choice for you and your family.
