Issi: Our Supernova

On Saturday 31st July, 2021, Issi began her latest adventure, leaving a trail of glitter behind her as she returned to the cosmos.

Life-partner, daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, friend, colleague, passing acquaintance; Issi wasn’t these… she was the best of these… with added zest.

On this celestial body for just 50 years, 9 months and 28 days (plus or minus a few hours), Issi made the most of every one of her Earth years, grabbing every opportunity and living her fullest life.

She had a child-like wonder of the world and its residents. She travelled to all parts of this globe, fuelled by her desire to experience everything. Whether it was gambling in Las Vegas; carrying a Geiger counter in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone; or getting as close as was permitted (or her olfactory system would allow) to penguins in the Antarctic, she never shied away from adventure. It remains a mystery of the universe how she ever got anywhere, being famously chaotic in her packing style and time-management! Nevertheless, wherever Issi travelled, home was where her heart was. Brighton was her ultimate happy place.

Issi was a woman with razor-sharp intelligence coupled with unending curiosity. She was deeply committed to learning and education. Ignorance was acceptable to Issi; remaining ignorant was not. She dedicated her final months to addressing the inequalities in education, caused by the pandemic, by volunteering in a primary school and tutoring secondary school pupils. Though, how she managed to control her potty-mouth in school is another mystery of the universe!

Issi always left you thinking. Whether it was something profound, ridiculously funny or wildly inappropriate, she left her mark on everyone’s heart. She had an energy that, with just one encounter, you would never forget her.

She loved so many things: Lego, Brussels sprouts, penguins, astronomy, rosé wine, her beach hut, reality TV, crafting, swimming in the sea, crime fiction, physics, the middle aisle in Aldi or Lidl, cats, her little car, Line of Duty, Christmas in Northern Ireland, Park Run, dog walks, rainbows, the beach, the 2p games in the arcade, football (especially women’s), the NHS, chemistry, Diet Pepsi, dancing, Facebook, writing, enormous Starbucks lattes, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, audio books, bike riding, multi-packs of Curly Wurly, apostrophes, lentils, music festivals, Ikea, stationery, Hobbycraft, apple crumble with lashings of custard, all things London Underground, cheese, napping, organising her craft stash, post-it notes, Game of Thrones … The list could go on randomly, but the connecting factor was that whatever Issi was interested in, she embraced with a passion. Yet, most of all, she loved the people around her. Human connection, whether actual or virtual, gave Issi pleasure and purpose.

She was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. However, it was the great love of her life, Mikey, who brought her the most joy. Mikey was always by her side (probably carrying the bag, bike, wet-suit, snacks…) for each and every adventure over the last decade. She adored every atom of him. She still had plenty to give to the rest of us: she was loving, compassionate and really very silly!

Nonetheless, Issi had a firm understanding of what was important and had absolute conviction in her beliefs. She was a champion of social consciousness; willing to fight for any under-dog. Her own health issues never stopped her reaching out to anyone in need. Her causes were as wide ranging as addressing homelessness to campaigning for women’s equality in sport; from promoting mental well-being to volunteering in medical trials; from celebrating human diversity to tackling environmental protection. Issi was always a woman of action (and fine and eloquent words).

Logic, science and the search for truth (in the quagmire of political and media sound-bite culture posing as fact) were important to Issi. She loved a ‘heated debate’ but your opinions had better be backed up by verifiable facts!

Issi’s life was not long enough but it was a life of so much accomplishment. She enjoyed academic success at the highest level, gaining an MSc in astrophysics; she was well respected in the field of accountancy, which she dipped in and out of to fund the next adventure; and she accumulated an impressive hoard of medals for various triathlons and marathons, in various forms, in various locations.

Along the way, she gathered friends like flowers. Most will know her as funny, outgoing, vivacious and kind. Those closest to her knew that she could also be introspective and often frustrated and troubled by injustices and inequalities. Everyone who knew Issi, even just a little, has lost a bit of sparkle in their life. She is deeply missed.

Somewhere (over a meteorological phenomenon caused by reflection, refraction, and dispersion of light in water droplets; resulting in a spectrum of light appearing as a multi-coloured circular arc in the celestial sphere concentric to the Earth), according to the law of conservation of energy and Einstein’s formula equating energy and mass, the energy we all knew as Issi is still around; in our hearts and memories.
