Roy Wales was my music teacher at Rayleigh Sweyne School from 1967 until he left. He started Southend Youth Orchestra in which I was a founder member. He encouraged me as an orchestral player. So sad to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family.

Dear Christine, Ruth, Simon and Anna, we send you our love and prayers at this very sad time. Roy was an inspiration to us as the founder and Musical Director of the Southend Festival Chorus and we have fond memories of sharing such good times with him, especially when we were 'on tour' with the choir. We really appreciated his active support as our President over the past years and were privileged to greet him and shake his hand at our Elijah Concert at St Augustine's on 18 November 2023.

I worked with Roy as a colleague for the six years that he blazed a trail in Essex between 1967 and 1973, first at Rayleigh Sweyne school and then as Director of Music for the County Borough of Southend on Sea. He created opportunities for youngsters that had a lifetime impact, whether or not they became professional musicians themselves. I learnt so much from him!
