In memory of
Michael James Kavanagh
Michael James Kavanagh age 77.
Born Hitchin 13th August 1947, passed away peacefully in Moggerhanger on 12th February 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
A horticulturist by trade, Michael lived a very eventful and fulfilling life.
Son of James and Phyllis, he was raised in Stotfold, alongside his older brother Peter and twin sister Mary.
He attended St Mary's school in Stotfold, followed by Stratton School in Biggleswade. He studied at the Hertfordshire College of Agriculture and Horticulture in St Albans.
Michael met Linda, his wife to be, on 7th April 1967.
Having learned of the VSO at college, he fulfilled an ambition and moved to Tanzania in September that year, to live and work for the government in the fight against sleeping sickness.
Returning to the UK in September 1968, he married Linda in 1969 before moving back to Tanzania, where they both stayed for 2 years before coming home again and having two sons, Russell in 1974 and James in 1976.
The family lived happily in a caravan in Campton, where Michael displayed his entrepreneurial spirit, by growing trees, keeping pigs and picking brussels amongst other ventures.
The big move to Wilden in 1978 was an opportunity to run his own pig farm and business, full time.
Clearly working abroad and starting his own business multiple times wasn't enough. As after pig farming, he moved on to importing and building computers, before running a computer business in Bedford and ultimately establishing what was only the second independent internet service provider in the country.
Somehow in between, he started a landscape gardening business, met lifelong friends, built and ran a garden centre and built his own house. Twice. Also, In 1999 during a tumultuous period in it's history, he was instrumental in saving Bedford Blues rugby club.
He leaves behind his wife Linda and sons, Russell and James. He is greatly missed by everyone who was lucky enough to have him touch their life.
